El mundial de formula 1 empieza por fin, después de una pretemporada con muchísimos rumores, cambios, conjeturas... la parrilla de mañana ya es sorprendente, con los Ferrari no del todo bien, Renault algo mal, McLaren fatal, Brawn GP (ex Honda) arrasando...
Al final parece que los cambios en la normativa sobre aerodinámica tan brutal han dado sus frutos y los equipos están mucho más igualados. A ver si tenemos carreras divertidas a partir de Australia.

La carrera será en directo a las 8:00(hora española) y repetida a las 14:00. Se podrá ver por La Sexta.

Vuelve Barrio Sésamo!

Treinta y tres años después de su primera emisión en España en TVE -la única cadena que existía entonces-, Barrio Sésamo vuelve a la cadena pública. Juega conmigo Sésamo es el título de la versión del siglo XXI del clásico espacio infantil. Llegará a La 2 (de lunes a viernes, 8.00) la próxima semana, dentro del contenedor infantil Los lunnis, para que los pequeños espectadores de ahora puedan aprender de las pedagógicas charlas y los inocentes rifirrafes que mantenían en los inicios los famosos muñecos. Antena 3 también estrenó episodios de la serie en octubre de 2006.

I recently read about Transparency International an independent organization that examines where corruption appears. They make a "transparency ranking" of countries and Sweden appears, together with Denmark, in the first place.
Hace poco leí un artículo sobre Transparencia Internacional, una organización independiente que examina la incidencia de la corrupción. Hacen "rankings de transparencia" de países y Suecia aparece, junto a Dinamarca, en el primer lugar.

That's another thing I like from the Swedish character: they tend to follow the rules. That seems boring for some people, but I appreciate it. Some Spaniards, on the other hand, think that stealing some small things at the supermarket, not paying their taxes, etc. is "being smart". Well... that's why Spain is in the number 28 of that ranking, and that's why the country is like it is...
Esa es otra cosa que me gusta de la manera de ser de los suecos: suelen seguir las reglas. Eso le parece aburrido a alguna gente, pero yo lo valoro. Algunos españoles, por el contrario, piensan que robar algunas cosillas en el supermercado, no pagar sus impuestos, etc. es "ser listo". Some months ago, the Spain's basketball team was accused of being racist after a picture where they made a slit-eye gesture. The whole country was accused of being racist, especially by Americans.

I am not going to judge the gesture now. I find stupid to be critizising every single gesture that anyone makes, willing to find offences everywhere because you feel like a victim. However, this gesture is more critizible than the one from the Spanish team, because they were going to play in China and had a more respectful tone than this one, where there is not any possible reason for it.
No voy a juzgar ese gesto ahora. Me parece estúpido ir criticando cualquier gesto que alguien haga, esperando encontrar ofensas por doquier porque te sientes una víctima. Sin embargo, este gesto es más criticable que el del equipo español, ya que ellos iban a jugar a China y tenía un tono más respetuoso que este, donde no hay ninguna razón posible detrás para hacerlo.

People is getting angry against their politicians. They might have a share a fault, it's true, but the main share belongs to the high businessmen and bankers, who have been playing with money all these years, taking too many risks, not giving a damn about anything but getting rich fast. Their wages were so high that their companies are out of money now... they suck it all!
La gente se enfada con los políticos. Puede que tengan una parte de culpa, es cierto, pero la mayor parte de la culpa es de los empresarios y banqueros, quienes han estado jugando con el dinero todos estos años, tomando demasiados riesgos, sin preocuparse de nada más que hacerse ricos rápidamente. Sus salarios eran tan altos que sus empresas están sin dinero ahora... ¡porque se lo llevaron todo ellos!

They claimed, as the lyrics say, that they deserved their wages because they are the ones who risk their money... but, when they fail, they ask the governments for help and they get millions from the poor people (via taxes), the same people that is poor because they weren't paying them enough.
Decían, como dice la letra, que se merecían sus salarios porque ellos eran los que arriesgaban su dinero... pero, cuando fallan, piden a los gobiernos que les ayuden y reciben millones de los pobres (vía impuestos), la misma gente que es pobre porque no les estaban pagando suficiente.

That's not risky. They are not assuming their fault. Workers have to do their job, and if they do it wrong, they are fired. Managers' task is to make the company go in the right direction. Therefore, if the company is going wrong, they should resign from their jobs.
Eso no es arriesgado. No están asumiendo su culpa. Los obreros tienen que hacer su trabajo, y si no lo hacen, los despiden. Los directivos tienen que hacer que la empresa vaya bien. Así que, si la compañía no va bien, deberían dimitir.

But, hey! They don't do that! What they do instead, is fire workers "to save money"... people who are not guilty from the company's health, because that's not their job. Some companies are even firing people when they are not having losses, they are just earning less money. Many people could keep their jobs if their bosses accepted to earn less money... but they don't want to.

Some months ago Spanish Basketball National team was accused of being racist because of a silly picture. I already gave my opinion here about how dumb it was that accusation. But it seems some people never have enough.
Hace unos meses la selección española de basket fue acusada de racismo por culpa de una foto tonta. Ya di mi opinión aquí sobre lo estúpido de esa acusación. Pero parece que alguna gente nunca tiene suficiente.

Now, a Islamic community in London has accused The Simpsons to be a racist show because of an episode where Homer thinks that a new neighbour of him is a terrorist only because he is a Muslim. So, they claim the show is racist... (more info here).
Ahora la comunidad islámica de Londres acusa a Los Simpsons de ser racistas porque en un episodio Homer piensa que un nuevo vecino es un terrorista sólo porque es musulmán. Por eso, dicen que la serie es racista... (más información aquí).

I am sorry to say this, but those guys are STUPID (and I don't say it because they are muslims, I just say it because they are absolutely stupid to think that).
Siento decir esto, pero esa gente es ESTÚPIDA (y no lo digo porque sean musulmanes, sino porque es estúpido pensar eso).

OF COURSE Homer is a racist! That's the point! That episode it's made precisely to criticize the people who act like that. Homer thinks that the Muslim guy is a terrorist, but the guy is NOT a terrorist. That's the difference between a racist show and a sarcastic show. It's the same as that episode when he met a homosexual and was afraid that Bart would "get it" too. It's a stupid behaviour, and they show that behaviour to point out how wrong it is.
¡CLARO que Homer es un racista! ¡Esa es la idea! Ese episodio está hecho precisamente para criticar a la gente que actúa así. Homer piensa que el musulmán es un terrorista, pero el tío NO lo es. Esa es la diferencia entre una serie racista y una sarcástica. Es igual que aquel episodio en el que conoce a un homosexual y tiene miedo de que Bart "se contagie". Es un comportamiento estúpido, y muestran ese comportamiento estúpido para señalar lo incorrecto que es.

They are helping the Islamic community, you idiots! At least the American associations said they were glad that the show tried to help them... let's hope the British Muslims learn from them.

Encuentro con profesionales españoles en Suecia

Mensaje de la embajada española en Suecia, recibido en mi Facebook:

Desde la embajada de España en Estocolmo estamos planteando hacer un ciclo de encuentros entre profesionales de alto nivel españoles en Suecia y vosotros, estudiantes españoles en Suecia.

Entre los profesionales se encuentran: directivos, de mediana y multinacional empresa; ejecutivos, de telecomunicaciones y financieros; altos funcionarios, españoles y comunitarios; abogado; científico e investigador...

Los encuentros serán en el salón de la cancillería y al final de los mismos, habrá una copa de cava.

Para acudir a los mismos es indispensable:

1. Estar apuntado en el grupo facebook de Erasmus en Suecia, por ello, si tenéis algún amigo que no sea miembro del grupo decídselo para que pueda acudir a los encuentros.

2. Para que se den los encuentros, tiene que haber como mínimo, 15 de vosotros apuntados

3. Para apuntarse será necesario dar nombre completo y correo electrónico, en la página del foro o en el tema nuevo de facebook que ha sido creado a tal fin.

De cara a ponernos en contacto con el primer profesional, y dado que los estudiantes abarcáis un gran número de áreas, seria interesante que o bien a Paco Tirado, o a mi Roque Adrada, nos hicierais llegar vuestro sector de interés.

Por ejemplo, si 5 de vosotros nos decís que estáis interesados en el ejecutivo de empresa de telecomunicaciones, nos pondremos a trabajar para que sea el primer encuentro.

Accommodation in Karlstad / Alojamiento en Karlstad

A new semester is aproaching to Karlstad University, and some students are close to arrive there to start their Erasmus in the city. This post is my small contribution to solve your doubts about the accommodation in the city. You can check my other posts about Karlstad clicking here.
Un nuevo semestre se aproxima a la Universidad de Karlstad, y algunos estudiantes van a llegar pronto para empezar su Erasmus en la ciudad. Este post es mi pequeña contribución a resolver vuestras dudas sobre el alojamiento en la ciudad. Puedes visitar otros posts sobre Karlstad haciendo click aquí.

I've already talked about the city itself, thoug briefly, in this post. However, I forgot to add a map to explain where Karlstad is, so here you are:
Ya he hablado sobre la ciudad en sí misma, aunque brevemente, en este post. Sin embargo, olvidé añadir un mapa para explicar dónde está Karlstad, así que ahí va:

There are three student accommodations offered for Erasmus in Karlstad: Campus Futurum, Rosenborg and Norrstrandgatan (there used to be a forth, Potatisen, but it was closed down a couple of years ago). The first two are dorms and the last one is more like a big house, so I am talking about the first two, because more people is going to go to them... and because I lived there and not in Norrstrand.
En Karlstad se ofrecen 3 alojamientos para Erasmus: Campus Futurum, Rosenborg y Norrstrandgatan (había una cuarta, Potatisen, pero la cerraron hace unos años). Los primeros son residencias y la última es más bien una casa grande, por lo que voy a hablar de las dos primeras porque va a ir más gente a ellas... y porque yo viví allí y no en Norrstrand.

CAMPUS FUTURUM
(or just Campus)
It's a dorm located in the North East of the city, close to the University, and formed by 14 buildings with 9 to 12 rooms in each floor. Individual bathroom, shared kitchen.
Es una residencia situada en el Noreste de la ciudad, cerca de la Universidad, y formado por 14 edificios con 9-12 habitaciones en cada piso. Baño individual, cocina compartida.

Good things:

Close to the University. 10 minutes walking and you are there.
Modern buildings.
Awesome rooms: modern, plenty of space (even too much, maybe), really well isolated from the noise (you can have a party in the kitchen and nobody notices it if you close the door).
Really easy to get internet connection: there is a DSL plug in every room, so you just need to call the company that you prefer and tell them to start providing you the connection. I got it in less than 24 hours.

Cosas buenas:

Cerca de la Universidad. 10 minutos andando y ya estás allí.
Edificios modernos.
Habitaciones fantásticas: modernas, mucho espacio (incluso puede que demasiado), bien aisladas del ruido (puedes tener una fiesta en la cocina y nadie se da cuenta si cierras la puerta).
Muy fácil de conseguir conexión a internet: hay un enchufe de ADSL en cada habitación, y sólo necesitas llamar a la compañía que prefieras y decirles que te empiecen a proveer la conexión. Yo la tuve en menos de 24 horas.

Bad things:

Far from the city center. You must take a bus when you want to go out, go shopping, etc.
The big rooms are too big for an Erasmus student (we don't have so many stuff to fill that space) and you pay for it. It's a bit more expensive than Rosenborg.
Lower Erasmus students vs Swedish students ratio. I say this as a bad thing because Swedish students are not so open and friendly as exchange students.

Cosas malas:

Lejos del centro de la ciudad. Tienes que coger un autobús cuando quieres salir, comprar, etc.
Las habitaciones grandes son muy grandes para un Erasmus (no tenemos tantas cosas para rellenar ese espacio) y se paga por ello. Son un poco más caras que Rosenborg.
Menor ratio de estudiantes Erasmus frente a suecos. Pongo esto como algo malo porque los suecos son menos abiertos y simpáticos que los estudiantes de intercambio.

ROSENBORG:
Dorm located in the south-west part of the city. It's a single building with 3 floors, 20 rooms each. Two kitchens per floor, individual bathrooms.
Residencia localizada en el suroeste de la ciudad. Es un sólo edificio con 3 plantas, 20 habitaciones por cada una. Dos cocinas por planta, baños individuales.
Good things:

Not far from the city center. About thirty minutes walking or 10 by bike.
Nice play to ride a bike.
Really good atmosphere, most of the people there are exchange students.
Cheaper rooms.

Cosas buenas:

No está lejos del centro. Unos 30 minutos andando o 10 en bici.
Buen sitio para andar en bici.
Extraordinario ambiente, la mayoría de la gente son estudiantes de intercambio.
Habitaciones más baratas.

Bad things:

Older building (though is not bad).
More difficult to get internet (you have to share it with a Swed, Erasmus students are not allowed to get it there).
Far from the University.

Cosas malas:

Edificio más viejo (aunque no es malo)
Más difícil conseguir internet (tienes que compartirlo con algún sueco, a los Erasmus no se les permite contratarla allí).

As you can see, both have ups and downs. I enjoyed a lot living in both of them.

Alejandro Sanz acusado de evadir impuestos

Podéis leer en esta noticia (así como en muchas otras si lo buscáis en google) que Alejandro Sanz está siendo investigado por evadir impuestos. Qué ironía. Uno de las caras visibles de la SGAE, que tanto pide que la gente no robe dinero a los "artistas", se dedica luego (todo supuestamente por ahora) a estafar a todos los españoles.

Menuda basura "representa" a los artistas... Pese a que en una entrada anterior defendía que la música es un bien que no se aprecia y se da por hecho erróneamente que debería ser gratis, eso no significa que apoye a la SGAE y sus estúpidas medidas. Es más, creo que son parte del problema.

Unos pocos ladrones como Sanz, Teddy Bautista, Ramoncín y compañía (curiosamente la mayoría de ellos no hacen música nueva desde hace siglos) se dedican a forrarse a cuenta del dinero que generan los artistas pequeños (los de verdad). A ellos les da igual que la música se vaya al garete, con tal de que ellos se sigan forrando. Las medidas que crean así lo demuestran.

Esta noticia no hace más que empeorar la ya lamentable imagen de este individuo, residente en Miami: aficionado a la pintura (por lo que tiene contratado a un tío para que le limpie los pinceles, ya que eso es mucho trabajo para él [no me lo invento, sacado de una entrevista]), y que no sabe cómo le podían gustar Deep Purple de joven, "con lo malísimos que eran" [sacado de otra entrevista]... Sólo la lista de musicazos que nombran entre sus influencias a Deep Purple ya debería hacer que se le cayera la cara de vergüenza por ese comentario.

Molaría que se pasara unos años en el talego, a ver si así se daba cuenta de que no es lo mismo dar por culo que que te den por culo.

Premios 40 principales

(todo en castellano porque no creo que le interese a ningún extranjero)

Estamos de enhorabuena, amantes de la música y españoles en general, porque mañana, 12 de diciembre, se celebra la gala de los Premios 40 Principales.

Y digo bien enhorabuena, porque es una ocasión única para que haya un terremoto o algún tipo de catástrofe natural del estilo que se lleve por delante a toda esa chusma: El Canto del Loco, Pereza, Melendi, Miguel Bosé, La Oreja de Van Gogh...

Decían hoy en la Cadena Ser, hablando de este acto, que premios como estos son una buena ocasión para medir la salud de la música. Menos mal que ni ellos se creerían eso (que más que nadie $aben cómo funciona e$e negocio), porque iríamos buenos en ese caso.

Tengo un respeto mínimo por los dos últimos, pero es que los otros 3...

Encima no se cuidan nada en disimular que le dan los premios a quien les sale de las narices ( o les paga más). El caso de el artista revelación es el más gracioso. Resulta que entre los nominados está Najwa Nimri... ¡Pero si esa tía ya ha sacado varios (infumables) discos! Sólo porque ahora haya añadido el nombre de Carlos Jean al suyo no significa que sea una artista nueva (ya que Jean ya trabajaba con ella antes).

Todos estos chupatintas, artistas de pacotilla que sólo están ahí por ser guaperas o por dinero, cánceres de la música, están ahí recibiendo premios y honores, mientras montones de ARTISTAS, de cualquier estilo, malviven sin que nadie les haga caso.

Some months ago I was claiming here that Alonso should leave Renault and join Honda... I couldn't be more wrong. Today, Honda has announced that they are selling the team because of the economic crisis.

There has been controversy these days about the FIA efforts to reduce costs in F1. Now it seems that their warnings were right. Honda has been the team which expend more money in F1 lately (about 400 000 000 € a year), and its awful results didn't help.

Why am I sorry? Because you have a really difficult task to achieve. We all hope that you are different, that you are not going to disappoint us. Therefore, everybody is going to put a huge pressure on you. In addition, you receive your country in one of the hugest crises in history (created by others) and you will have to find a way to solve it. In case you made the slightest mistake, even one that would be forgiven to others, everybody is going to start blaming you and accusing you of being a fraud.

Por tanto, todo el mundo va a poner una gran presión sobre tus hombros. It seems that we are on an recession time nowadays... at least that's what the news are talking about every day. The US government has recently approved a plan to save us from that crash... man! how easy is being a rich guy!
Parece ser que estamos en época de recesión... al menos eso es lo que dicen en las noticias todos los días. El gobierno de los Estados Unidos ha aprovado recientemente un plan para salvarnos de la crisis... ¡vaya! ¡qué fácil es ser rico!

All those bank managers and high executives where growing their asses all these years, making money like animals and, what did they say when somebody claimed that they were earning TOO MUCH money? "This is capitalism, this is free market". Fair enough, but now that they screwed things up, it seems that this isn't free market any more. Now, the same people that was getting poor for them to be rich, has to give even more money to them to solve the mess that they've created. And what else can we do? The consequences would be worse if we didn't.
Todos esos banqueros y altos ejecutivos estuvieron haciéndose asquerosamente ricos todos estos años y, qué decían si alguien afirmaba que estaban ganando DEMASIADO dinero? "Esto es capitalismo, esto es libre mercado". Vale, pero ahora que la han fastidiado, parece que esto ha dejado de ser el libre mercado. Ahora, la misma gente que se hacía pobre para hacerlos ricos a ellos, tiene que darles aún más dinero para que arreglen el lío que han creado. ¿Y qué otra cosa podemos hacer? I agree that something has to be done to solve the crisis. But we should learn about this, and next time someone who is earning too much money in a merciless way says we shouldn't bother him, we should say: "Yes? Fuck you, we saved your ass, share your earnings the same way that you made us share your debts".
Estoy de acuerdo en que hay que hacer algo para resolver esta crisis. Pero deberíamos aprender de esto y, la próxima vez que alguien gane demasiado dinero sin ser solidario y diga que no deberíamos molestarle, deberemos decir: "¿Ah sí? Que te jodan, te salvamos el culo, comparte tus ganancias del mismo modo que nos hiciste compartir tus pérdidas".

It is funny that I went to a concert at Globen, in Stockholm, without knowing that the stadium was the sun.

Check this out:

The Sweden Solar System is the world's largest model of our planetary system, at a scale of 1:20 million. The Sun is represented by the Globe arena in Stockholm, the largest spherical building in the world. The planets are placed and sized according to scale with the inner planets being in Stockholm and Jupiter (diameter 7.3 m) at the International airport Arlanda. The outer planets follow in the same direction with Saturn in Uppsala and Pluto in Delsbo, 300 km from the Globe. At each planet station, exhibits provide information about astronomy and the natural sciences, and also about related mythology and culture. The Stockholm Visitor's Board (former Stockholm Information Service) was a sponsor of the project in the beginning, like several museums, theaters, parks and scientific institutions.

If I knew about it before coming back from Sweden, I'd tried to look for the rest of the planets. It is a quite curious fact. These Swedes are crazy! :P

Anyway, great race today in Italy. As some people say, they should irrigate the tracks every race, it's so much funnier when it is wet.
Bueno, pedazo de carrera hoy en Italia. Como alguna gente dice, deberían regar las pistas cada carrera, porque es muchísimo más interesante cuando está mojado.

First of all, big congratulations to Sebastian Vettel, a great and young driver that scored today his first victory, and broke Alonso's record as the youngest driver to win a F1 race. And he did it without a good car (or even a mediocre car), he did it with a Toro Rosso and in wet. He has a brilliant future in front of him.
Lo primero de todo, muchísimas felicidades a Sebastian Vettel, un gran piloto joven, que ha ganado hoy su primera carrera, rompiendo el récord de Alonso como piloto más precoz en hacerlo. Lo hizo, además, sin un buen coche (o incluso un coche mediocre), lo hizo con un Toro Rosso y en mojado. Menudo pedazo de futuro que tiene por delante.

Apart from that, brilliant race from Hamilton too, he recovered a lot of positions, though he couldn't overtake Massa and now is only one point ahead of him in the Championship. Not a good race for Kimi, who was out of the points and, whether if he likes it or not, is going to start thinking about helping his teammate to win the title.
Además de eso, muy buena carrera de Hamilton también, recuperó muchas posiciones, aunque no pudo adelantar a Massa y ahora está por delante de él en el campeonato sólo por un punto. Mala carrera para Kimi, que acabó fuera de los puntos y, le guste o no, va a tener que empezar a pensar en ayudar a su compañero de equipo a ganar el título.

Alonso made a good race and, for the first time in a lot of weeks, the team chose the right strategy. They were the first to change tyres and that helped them to recover a lot of positions. He finished fourth in the worst track for his horrible car.
Alonso hizo una buena carrera y, por primera vez en muchas semanas, su equipo escogió la estrategia adecuada. Fueron los primeros en cambiar ruedas y eso lo ayudó a recuperar muchas posiciones. Acabó cuarto en el peor circuito para su horrible coche.

And talking about that... This weekend Ferrari confirmed what many people already thought, that they were not going to fire Kimi for next year, nor even 2010. So, Alonso is not going to the red team in a couple of years. One team less to think about. Where should he drive next year?
Y hablando de eso... Esta semana Ferrari confirmó lo que mucha gente ya pensaba, que no iban a despedir a Kimi para el año que viene, ni siquiera para 2010. Así que Alonso no va a ir al equipo rojo hasta dentro de unos años. Un equipo menos que considerar. ¿Dónde debería conducir el año que viene?

A couple of weeks ago, I presented the four candidates (Ferrari, Renault, BMW and Honda). Now there is one less. I stick with my opinion that he should get out of Renault. It is the worst option for me. The car is crappy, they are always having budget problems, they focused too much in solving the problems in this year's car instead of building a good one for next year...
Hace unas semanas, os presentaba a los cuatro candidatos (Ferrari, Renault, BMW y Honda). Ahora hay uno menos. Sigo con mi opinión de que debería irse de Renault. Es el peor equipo para mí. El coche es malísimo, siempre tienen problemas de presupuesto, se tuvieron que preocupar demasiado en arreglar el coche de este año y van con retraso con el coche del año que viene...

Neither BMW or Honda have that problem. Both teams are making a lot of work thinking on next year. Honda has a worst car, but has Ross Brawn. However, I think I am going to change my mind and state that Alonso should go to BMW, since now it seems that it could be possible, because they have a better engine. Their lack of improvement in these last races seems for me an evidence that they are focusing on next year's car. In addition, Alonso would drive with his friend Robert Kubica.
Ni BMW ni Honda tienen ese problema. Ambos equpos están haciendo un montón de trabajo de cara al año que viene. Honda tiene un coche peor, pero tiene a Ross Brawn. Sin embargo, creo que voy a tener que cambiar de opinión un poco y decir que Alonso debería ir a BMW, ya que ahora parece posible que lo pueda hacer, porque tienen un mejor motor. Su falta de mejora en las últimas carreras me parece una prueba más de que están ya centrados en el año que viene. Además, Alonso correría allí con su amigo Rober Kubica.

BMW said they were going to announce their drivers very soon, so we will know what happens.

Finally, the new version is available! You might remember I told you about this media player before. After this short period, it has improved a lot: new User Interface (though you can change it with "feathers" if you prefer another one), smart playlists, better performance, less crashes, improved features... It is still a beta but, if the guys from the Mozilla foundation keep working like this, iTunes and the other "mainstream" media player should better start to be scared! :P

One year ago, I made that route that you see on the picture and, after an exhausting day, I arrived in Karlstad. It was the beginning of a great experience, that some people is starting now. I felt as a foreigner in the city those days, though in a short time I felt as if I were at home. Those were days of meeting people, nerves and excitement; everything was new and each day was an adventure.
I've talked to the girls from my university that are going this year and that made me remember all my feelings those days.

Hace un año, hice esa ruta que veis en la foto y, después de un día agotador, llegué a Karlstad. Era el principio de una gran experiencia, que alguna gente empieza ahora. Me sentía un extraño en la ciudad esos días, aunque en un tiempo muy corto me sentía como en casa. Eran días de conocer gente, nervios y emoción; todo era nuevo y cada día era una aventura.
He hablado con las chicas de mi universidad que van este año y eso me hizo recordar todos mis sentimientos esos días.

How do I find student housing in Sweden?

Arriving in Sweden as an international student without having accommodation is not unusual. In the student towns, Lund and Uppsala, as well as Sweden’s big cities Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö, demand for rental properties greatly exceeds supply.

Finding a room may sometimes be easy enough for students on exchanges such as the Erasmus programme. The university makes rooms available these students. But many universities do not guarantee housing for Masters or PhD students or for normal undergraduates.

There are several opportunities to find housing as an international student in Sweden. The easiest and quickest way is to contact the International Housing Office, if such an institution exists, as in Lund.

In Uppsala the student union runs the ‘Bostadsjouren’ database. This contains ads for rooms and apartments close to the university. These are usually furnished and are let out as sublets (‘andra hand’). An advantage for international students is that these rooms are not in a queue system, in contrast to most Swedish housing companies.

In Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö your first port of call should be the student housing companies. But because of high demand the student housing companies will almost always place you in a queue. Signing up to these as early as possible will give you the best chance of finding a place: the longer you have been in the queue, the higher your chance of finding a student apartment. You can join the queue via the companies’ websites.

In Lund and Uppsala you might be able to live at a ‘nation’. Nations are historic student organisations, sometimes focused on special interests like politics or music. Each is named after a Swedish city or county. Every nation has a bar or a restaurant and offers housing to some of its members.

The only precondition for living at a nation is being active there, which means for instance working at the bar or volunteering at events. Both Lund and Uppsala have more than ten nations.

Many Swedes – students and non-students - use the websites www.blocket.se and www.bopoolen.se to find rental properties, but as an international student this is probably the most difficult way. Many classified ads are only in Swedish and you have to contact the landlord immediately to have a chance of bagging a room, especially in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. Some accommodation is snapped up after a few minutes. Almost all rental accommodation advertised on these sites is sublet housing; ‘first hand’ contracts, under which tenants have a permanent right to remain, are almost never found through these advertisements.

There are basically three types of housing for students in Sweden. To hire a room on a corridor in a student dorm is most popular, as this helps students meet new people (and secure invitations to the best parties).

You can also hire an apartment with a kitchenette or a room in shared accommodation, although this is very rare in Sweden.

Student accommodation is generally of a high standard in Sweden. Most student rooms have a private bathroom and internet access.

However, you should accept that you might not find your dream room or apartment in the beginning, but there often is the possibility to move in the middle of the month, when pressure on student accommodation drops.

Even if you have to stay at a hostel first it can be a lot of fun since they are crowded with other ‘homeless’ students and therefore it is easy to meet new people. After a couple of days everybody usually finds proper accommodation.

Erasmus: Things to think / Cosas a tener en cuenta al irse de Erasmus

Some people is about to leave (or maybe already left) as Erasmus, so here are some random things that you should take into account before leaving:
-Bring movies and books in the language that you're going to use in the country. The first will allow you to hang out with your mates when you don't have anything more to do, the second will allow you to get more used to think in that language (and it's good for the boredom, too).
-Do not bring more clothes than you need. In the case of Sweden, it is NOT going to be freezing in august or September, so you better off bring summer things and ask someone to send the winter ones later by mail. It's cheaper.
-Make sure you leave all the paper work done (or ready for someone to do it) here and that you bring everything that you'll need for the paper work there.
-Don't expect to have an Erasmus similar to anyone that you know. Every single Erasmus is different, even from people in the same country and the same city. Maybe you know someone who was in that city where you're going the previous year and he or she told you that the people there was this or that and they did this or that. All that is gone and you are going to live a completely different, yet equally exciting, experience. Go there simply willing to have fun, and you'll have it.
-Bring music with you and, if you have an mp3 player or an iPod, even better. You are going to expend a lot of time in busses, waiting for things, etc. so you'll need something to entertain you.
-If you have a driving license, take it. You might think you won't need it but you never know when you're going to decide to rent a car and drive around the country :P
-If you play any sport, bring the equipment with you if you can. Playing a sport is one of the best ways to get to know people.
-If you know how to play an instrument (especially guitar), bring it too. It's the best company for barbeques!

Last thing (if I don't edit after remembering more) is that you might have bad days. It's really likely to happen one day or another. The only thing to do about it is trying to take away the bad thoughts from your head and enjoy your time there. Sooner or later you will be cool. Thinking in coming back at the first sign of troubles is not the solution.

Algunos están a punto de partir (o incluso ya lo han hecho) como Erasmus, así que ahí van algunas cosas salteadas a tener en cuenta antes de partir:
-Lleva películas y libros en la lengua que vas a usar en ese país. Las primeras te permitirán pasar el rato con tus compañeros cuando no tengáis nada mejor que hacer, los segundos te ayudarán a acostumbrarte a usar el idioma en cuestión (y también son buenos para el aburrimiento).
-No lleves ropa que no necesites. En el caso de Suecia, NO va a hacer un frío tremendo en agosto o septiembre, así que lleva ropa de verano y pídele a alguien que te envíe ropa de invierno por correo más tarde. Es más barato.
-Asegúrate de que dejas listo el papeleo (o a alguien listo para hacerlo por ti) aquí y que te llevas todo lo necesario para el papeleo allá.
-No esperes tener un Erasmus parecido al de nadie que conozcas. Cada uno de los Erasmus es diferente, incluso para gente en el mismo país y la misma ciudad. Puede que conozcas a alguien que ha estado en la misma ciudad que tú años anteriores y te dijera que había gente allí de una forma u otra y que hicieron estoy o aquello. Todo eso pasó, y tú vas a vivir algo completamente diferente, aunque igualmente emocionante. Vete allí buscando pasártelo bien, simplemente, y lo harás.
-Lleva música contigo y, si tienes un mp3 o un iPod, mejor. Vas a pasar mucho tiempo en buses, esperando cosas, etc. así que necesitarás algo para entretenerte.
-Si tienes carnet de conducir, llévalo. Igual piensas que no lo necesitarás, pero nunca sabes cuándo puedes decidir alquilar un coche e irte a conducir por todo el país!
-Si haces algún deporte, lleva equipación contigo si puedes. Practicar un deporte es una de las mejores maneras de conocer gente.
-Si sabes tocar un instrumento (especialmente la guitarra), llévalo también. ¡Es la mejor compañía para las barbacoas!

Por último (si no me acuerdo luego y edito) es que puede que tengas algún mal día. Es bastante probable que pase un día u otro. Lo único que hay que hacer es tratar de apartar los malos pensamientos de tu cabeza y tratar de pasárselo bien. Más pronto o más tarde estarás bien. Pensar en marcharse tan pronto como hay un problema no es la solución.

I've tried to imitate him and this is what happened. Maybe is not easy to swim as good as he does, but he makes it seem like that! 6 golden medals and 6 world records (and on his way to achieve his goal of 8 gold medals).

Even if he doesn't get to break Spitz's record, he has definitely become a sport legend. When somebody thought about an athlete, people thought about Carl Lewis; Michael Jordan was for basketball, Pele or Maradona in football... now, Michael Phelps is synonym of swimmer.
He is for sure the star of this Olympic Games in Beijing 2008.
Incluso si no consigue batir el récord de Spitz, se ha convertido en una leyenda del deporte. Spain is racist???? / ¿¿¿España es racista???

British yellow newspapers strike again... This time, they claim that this image is racist:
La prensa amarilla británica ataca de nuevo... esta vez, dicen que esta imagen es racista:

As you can see, Spanish players appear making slit-eyed gestures in this ad. That is enough for The Guardian to state that the image is racist and is mocking the Chinese people. It also wonders if anybody in Spain took into account that this Olympic Games are played in China.
Como podéis ver, los jugadores españoles aparecen achinando los ojos en este anuncio. Eso es suficiente para The Guardian para afirmar que la imagen es racista y se burla de los chinos. También se pregunta si nadie en España tuvo en cuenta que los JJOO se juegan en China.

Are we crazy??? OF COURSE they knew it. That's the reason for the gesture. It's only a sort of joke, they're going to play in an asiatic country, so they become a little bit asiatic. They took the golden medal in Japan's World Championship with a Japanese headscarf and nobody complaint.
¿Es que no estamos volviendo locos? POR SUPUESTO que lo sabían. Esa es la razón del gesto. Es una especie de broma, van a jugar en un país asiático, así que se vuelven un poco asiáticos. Recogieron la medalla de oro en el mundial de Japón con una cinta japonesa en la cabeza y nadie se quejó.

Actually, where is the racism there? Isn't it true that asiatic people have eyes like that? Asiatics are more yellowish and have slit-eyes, black people are darker and white people are white. That is a fact, and is the people who finds racism in that who is being actually racist. I've read some people wondering if the Spaniards would get offended if the Chinese called them monkey-haired. Isn't the difference quite obvious? That is an insult. Calling someone monkey is an insult, a fact is not. I'd never get offended if someone called me white, because I AM WHITE. Come on, not even the Chinese embasy in Spain considers that ad racist... but, as usual, British and American newspapers start going crazy and finding racism everywhere, when there isn't elsewhere than in their minds.

He leído a gente preguntarse si los españoles se ofenderían si los chinos los llamaran "pelo-mono". ¿Es que no es obvia la diferencia? Eso es un insulto. Llamar a alguien mono es un insulto, un hecho no. Nunca me ofendería si me llamaran blanco, porque soy blanco. Obviously, they had to remember cases like when Lewis Hamilton was booed in Barcelona... another stupid case created by them, when they saw racism against a black guy where there was hate against a driver that people disliked.
Claro, ya tienen que recordar casos como el de Lewis Hamilton, cuando fue abucheado en Barcelona... otro caso estúpido creado por ellos, cuando vieron racismo contra un tío negro donde no había más que odio hacia un piloto que no gusta.

China vs Spain / China vs España

What a game!!! Spain started well but, at the second quarter, they started failing several shots and passes and they got to have a disadvantage of 15 points until the 4th quarter. Only then they recovered all that difference and tied the match. On the extra time the Chinese were out of moral and Spain won with 10 points of difference at the end.

Ricky Rubio was one of the best players of the team, along with Pau Gasol and Rudy Fernández, even though he is only 17 years old. What a great future that this guy has.

¡Menudo partido! España empezó bien pero, en el segundo cuarto, empezaron a fallar muchos tiros y pases y llegaron a tener una desventaja de 15 puntos hasta el último cuarto. Sólo en ese momento empezaron a recuperar la diferencia y empataron el partido. En la prórroga los chinos estaban desmoralizados y España ganó con diez puntos de diferencia al final.

Ricky Rubio fue uno de los mejores jugadores de España, junto a Pau Gasol y Rudy Fernández, y eso que sólo tiene 17 años. Menudo futuro que tiene este tío.

What an amazing band. Actually, is not a band, it's what some people call a "superband" (members of prominent bands playing together).
They have to studio albums: SMPTe and Bridge Across Forever, and both are just incredibly good.

Transatlantic is a progressive rock supergroup founded in 1999 by Neal Morse of Spock’s Beard and Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater and Liquid Tension Experiment. Other members include progressive rock veterans Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings) and Pete Trewavas (Marillion). After releasing two highly acclaimed studio albums and two live recordings they disbanded in 2003 mainly because of Neal Morse’s decision to start a Christian rock career.

Resultó ser un gran proyecto en el que se aglutinaron cuatro de los más reconocidos músicos a nivel mundial, cuya compenetración sorprendió a los más excépticos.

Cuando Neal Morse decidió abandonar el proyecto tras convertirse al cristianismo en el 2001, Transatlantic se disolvió, o mejor dicho, inició un período de hibernación, que ojalá algún día, retome su rumbo. Por su parte, Trewabas, Portnoy y Stolt han seguido caminos distintos, publicando nuevos trabajos con sus respectivas agrupaciones, o en forma de colaboración en proyectos diversos.

ALOJAMIENTO PARA ERASMUS

Pego aquí un mensaje que me mandaron al Facebook desde el grupo de "Erasmus en Suecia":

ALGUNOS CONSEJOS A LOS BECARIOS ERASMUS PARA ASEGURARSE UN BUEN ALOJAMIENTO EN SUECIA

A la vista de los problemas que algunos de los estudiantes Erasmus tienen para lograr residencia en Suecia, os hacemos algunas recomendaciones útiles basadas en la experiencia de compañeros de años anteriores.

1) Residencias universitarias: previsión a largo y medio plazo. Lo mejor para tratar de asegurarse un buen alojamiento es ponerse en contacto lo antes posible, incluso en cuanto sepáis que habéis conseguido una beca Erasmus, con la Secretaría de la Facultad donde os hayan destinado, con objeto de que os pongan en la "listas" para alojarse en las Residencias Universitarias. Debido a la escasez de pisos, en todas las Universidades funcionan las listas de espera para alojarse en Residencias Universitarias que se rigen por el principio de “primer llegado, primer atendido” (“first arrived, first served”).

2) Pisos Internet. Para aquellos que prefieran vivir en pisos y no en las residencias universitarias, es posible ponerse en contacto por Internet desde España con alguna de agencias de alquiler de pisos. Bostad Direkt (www.bostaddirekt.com) es una de las más baratas y fiables. Bostadstjänst (www.bostadstjanst.com) es otra agencia seria. Si bien, tendréis que abonar 3000 Coronas (unos 320 Euros) al firmar el contrato, cantidad que os devolverán íntegramente si finalmente no encontráis piso.

3) Una vez estéis en Suecia, además de por Internet (cuidado con los fraudes) y otros contactos personales directos, os puede ayudar recurrir a dos vías:

o en los tablones de anuncios de todas las Facultades hay muchas notas de estudiantes que buscan a otros estudiantes para compartir piso.

o buscar en periódicos suecos, en la sección de alquiler de pisos.

4) Ventajas de la periferia. Si os han fallado las anteriores opciones, tened en cuenta que una solución útil para las Universidades de las tres grandes ciudades, sería buscar alojamiento en la periferia. El servicio de metro en Estocolmo es excelente y cubre un radio muy grande. Los alumnos que vayáis a la Universidad de Lund, debéis saber que la ciudad de Malmoe está muy cercana y la oferta de pisos para alquilar en Malmoe es mucho mayor que en Lund. Lo mismo sucedería en Gotemburgo: vivir en las afueras es mucho más barato que en la ciudad.

So, the Olympic Games are finally starting. The different countries are still waving their families and friends in the parade and soon the fire will start burning. There's been a lot of controversy about these games, but I am not going to talk about that (I'm just a potato, you know?). I just hope that Spain gets a lot of medals. We have many chances to do so in tennis (Nadal), cycling (Contador and Sastre), kayak (David Cal) and, of course, the basket team (with most of the guys who won the World Championship and with some even better new members [Ricky Rubio is going to play being only 17 years ond... f***ing amazing!!!]).

Many days to enjoy the best sport around!!

Bueno, finalmente los Juegos Olímpicos están empezando. Los diferentes países aún están saludando a su familia y amigos en el desfile y pronto el fuego empezará a arder. Ha habido bastante controversia sobre estos juegos, pero no voy a hablar de eso (no soy más que una patata...). Sólo espero que España consiga muchas medallas. Tenemos muchas opciones para hacerlo en tenis (Nadal), ciclismo (Contador y Sastre), kayac (David Cal) y, por supuesto, el equipo de baloncesto (con la mayor parte de los campeones del mundo y con un par de nuevos miembros aún mejores [Ricky Rubio va a jugar con sólo 17 años... ¡¡impresionante!!]).

Sony Powershot SX100 IS

That's the name of my new camera. My beloved Konica Minolta Dimage Z10 has a problem and takes the pictures blurred (and it wasn't possible to fix), so I had to get a new one. It was hard to say goodbye to my first camera but... live goes on.
The new camera is pretty cool too. It has x10 optical zoom, automatic and manual modes, a great F2.8 and, just like the iPhone (:D), it changes automatically the images from portrait to landscape when you turn the camera!!!
I still have to get used to it, but I'll be getting pictures of myself around there soon :D

Ese es el nombre de mi nueva cámara. Mi querida Konica Minolta Dimage Z10 tiene un problema y saca las fotos borrosas (y no se puede reparar), por lo que tuve que comprar otra. Fue duro despedirme de mi primera cámara pero... la vida sigue.
La cámara nueva es bastante guay también. Tiene x10 de zoom óptico, modos automáticos y manuales, un fantástico F2.8 y, como el iPhone (:D), ¡cambia automáticamente las fotos de formato paisaje a retrato (horizontal a vertical) cuando giras la cámara!
Aún tengo que acostumbrarme a ella, pero estaré por ahí sacando fotos mías pronto :D

Alonso & Honda?

Ross Brown, Honda's chief, said recently that his team wants Alonso driving for them next year. Would that be a good choice?

Right after the end of Fernando Alonso's contract with McLaren (and even before), rumours started about where he would drive the following years. After many speculations -almost every single team in the F1 but Toro Rosso and Super Aguri-, he came back to Renault. However, the French team wasn't doing very well ( and it keeps like that ) so many people claims that it won't take long for the Spanish driver to go to another team.

Ferrari is always the first name to appear. It's the best team (with McLaren) and Alonso's dream (after McLaren's nightmare). However, Ferrari has the current world champion driving for them and it's difficult for Alonso to be there in 2009. Some people claim that he will wait in Renault until having options and some others say that he will change.

These are the options:

Ferrari: The best option if it's possible to drive for them next year already (and in the future too). It looks difficult unless Kimi Raikonnen stops driving for them.

Renault: Fernando knows the team and feels comfortable there. Nevertheless, the cars were awful last year and this one they improved but are very bad anyway. The team claims that they're going to be good next year but they said the same this one and it didn't happen. Alonso itself said recently that he doesn't believe that Renault will win races next year. The main problem is that they are wasting time trying to fix this year's car, instead of focusing on making a great car for next year, seizing the change of the rules.

BMW: They did really well the first half of the championship, taking the place of the 3rd best team. Now they are a bit worse, but it seems for me that that's because they're focusing on next year's car. Therefore, it's quite reasonable to think that next year they can have a really good car, with the posibility of winning the championship.

Honda: Despite having a great budget, this team wasn't really good the past years. The car is not really good this year either but now they have one big good thing: Ross Brown. This man is, for many people, the main responsible of Michael Schumacher's world champion titles with Benneton and Ferrari. He showed what he is able to do in Silverstone with Barrichelo's podium. Honda claims that they are focusing a hell of a lot in next year, seizing the new rules, and that they're going to have a good car. It's really possible.

So, those are the options for Fernando Alonso. Everybody says that he wants to go to Ferrari whenever it will be possible and it seems that he'll have to wait at least one year. Should he change?
He knows Renault, but I think Honda would be a good option for him. I don't think he would be uncomfortable, since Brown keeps saying that Alonso is the best driver around and, even if the car is not the best, I bet is going to be better than Renault (since the french aren't working so much in next year's car) and he will have a better team in the strategy. Renault screwed many races this years in a strategic point of view, something that won't happen with Ross Brown leading the team.

In addition, some rumours said that Honda will be ok with a one-year-only contract, so there won't be problems waiting for Ferrari there. Who knows, maybe he will be so fine there that he won't want to change later.

We'll see what happens in a few months (maybe weeks).

Nada más romper su contrato con McLaren (e incluso antes), empezaron los rumores sobre cual sería su equipo los siguientes años. Después de muchas especulaciones -casi todos los equipos de la F1 menos Toro Rosso y Super Aguri-, volvió a Renault. Sin embargo, el equipo francés no lo estaba haciendo muy bien (y sigue así), por lo que mucha gente dice que el piloto español no tardará mucho en irse a otro equipo.

Ferrari siempre es el primer nombre en salir. Es el mejor equipo, junto a McLaren, y el sueño de Alonso (después de la pesadilla con los ingleses). Sin embargo, Ferrari tiene al actual campeón del mundo corriendo para ellos y es difícil que Fernando vaya allí en 2009. Algunos dicen que se quedará esperando en Renault hasta tener opciones y otros dicen que se irá.

Estas son las opciones:

Ferrari: La mejor opción si es posible correr con ellos ya el año que viene (y en el futuro también, claro). Parece difícil a no ser que Kimi Raikonnen deje de pilotar para ellos.
Renault: Fernando conoce el equipo y se siente a gusto en él. Sin embargo, los coches eran horribles el año pasado y este han mejorado pero siguen siendo muy malos. El equipo dice que el año que viene serán buenos, pero eso decían este año y no se cumplió. El mismo Alonso dijo recientemente que no cree que Renault vaya a ganar carreras el año próximo. El mañor problema es que están perdiendo mucho tiempo en intentar arreglar este coche en lugar de centrarse en hacer uno bueno para el año que viene, aprovechando el cambio de reglas.
BMW: Fueron muy competitivos la primera mitad del campeonato, consiguiendo el puesto de tercer mejor equipo. Ahora están un poco más flojos, pero creo que es porque ya se están dedicando al coche del año que viene. Por ello, es muy razonable pensar que el año que viene puedan tener un coche en condiciones de ganar el campeonato.
Honda:Pese a tener un presupuesto elevado, el equipo nunca fue muy bueno. El coche no es muy bueno este año tampoco, pero ahora tienen una cosa muy buena: Ross Brown. Este hombre es, para muchos, el artífice de los campeonatos del mundo de Michael Schumacher con Benneton primero y con Ferrari después. Demostró lo que es capaz con el podium de Barrichello en Siverlstone. Honda dice que se están esforzando muchísimo para aprovechar el cambio de normas del año que viene, así que es probable que tengan un buen coche.

Esas son las opciones para Alonso. Todo el mundo dice que quiere ir a Ferrari en cuanto sea posible y parece que el año que viene no va a ser. ¿Debería cambiar?
Conoce Renault, pero creo que Honda sería una buena opción para él. No creo que se sienta incómodo, dado que Brown no para de decir que es el mejor piloto en la actualidad, e, incluso si el coche no es el mejor, apuesto a que será mejor que el Renault (dado que los franceses no están trabajando en el coche del próximo año tanto como ellos) y tendrá un equipo mejor en la estrategia. Renault ya destrozó varias carreras estos años por la mala estrategia, algo que no pasaría con Ross Brown dirigiendo el equipo.

Además, algunos rumores dicen que a Honda no le importaría un contrato de sólo un año, así que no habría problemas por esperar a Ferrari allí. Quién sabe, igual se siente tan bien allí que luego ya no quiere cambiar.

Veremos que pasa en unos meses (puede que semanas).

London / Londres

A year ago I was finishing my time in London, capital of the UK. It was the first (of many) cities that I've visited.
Hace un año estaba acabando mi estancia en Londres, capital del Reino Unido. Fue la primera de las (muchas) ciudades que he visitado.

I was there for 3 weeks, learning English and enjoying the city too. I liked it way more than I expected: it wasn't so grey as I thought it was going to be (though the pollution is quite high), it had many big spaces to relax (i.e. parks), and it had many must-see places that I always wanted to see.
Estuve allí 3 semanas, aprendiendo inglés y disfrutando de la ciudad también. Me gustó bastante más de lo que pensaba: no era tan gris como pensaba que iba a ser (aunque sí hay bastante contaminación), tenía muchos sitios para relajarse (parques y demás), y tenía muchos sitios de esos que siempre has querido visitar.

I watched the Houses of Parliament, the Big Ben, the London Eye, Tower Bridge, I crossed Abbey Road...
And in the museum side, I was in the British Museum, Imperial War Museum (I like it more than the first, actually), National Gallery...
At night, I was in the Electric Ballroom!! Heavy metal disco! :D

London is a really nice city, and it's quite easy to go now from Spain with Ryanair , for example. I'd like to go again, actually, since my English level is a bit better now and I enjoy the British accent :P

Hungary GP / GP de Hungría

What a crazy GP today. It seemed that Lewis Hamilton was on his way for another easy victory before the start but, just then, Massa made an incredible one and overtook both of the McLaren cars. Then, Lewis had to struggle to chase him and he ruined one of his tyres breaking... so, many positions lost and a supposedly easy race for Massa to win. However, his Ferrari engine broke, giving the victory as a present to Kovalainen, who didn't especially deserve it so much. I think Timo Glock made a better race than him.
Menuda carrera loca hoy. Parecía que Lewis Hamilton iba a ganar otra carrera fácil hoy antes de la salida, pero justo en ese momento, Massa hizo una arrancada espectacular y pasó a los dos McLaren. Por tanto, Lewis tuvo que luchar para perseguirlo y en ello destrozó una de sus ruedas en una frenada... perdida de posiciones, por tanto, y una supuesta carrera fácil para Massa. Sin embargo, su motor Ferrari rompió, regalando la carrera a Kovalainen, alguien que tampoco es que se la mereciera especialemente. Creo que Timo Glock hizo una carrera mejor que él.

Fernando Alonso made a good start: he almost overtook Timo Glock, though at the end he only did it with Kimi (and that was a lot, actually). He managed to prevent Kimi from overtaking him a hell of a big part of the race but at the last pit stop the driver from Ferrari overtook him. At the end, position 4 for Fernando and a brilliant job considering his car.
Fernando Alonso hizo una buena salida: casi adelantó a Timo Glock, aunque al final sólo lo hizo con Kimi (y eso ya era bastante, la verdad). Consiguió evitar que Kimi lo adelantara en una gran parte de la carrera, hasta que en el último repostaje el piloto de Ferrari lo adelantó. Al final, cuarto puesto para Fernando en una gran carrera para él, teniendo en cuenta su coche.

The battle for the title is still tight after this race. Kimi gained back some points agains Lewis, but Ferrari has to make better next races if they want to win.
La batalla por el título sigue siendo reñida después de esta carrera. Kimi recuperó unos puntos con respecto a Lewis, pero Ferrari tiene que hacerlo mejor en las próximas carreras si quieren ganar finalmente.

Many people is about to start their Erasmus soon (some sooner than others, though) but, what is the main thing that you get from that experience?
Mucha gente va a empezar su Erasmus pronto (algunos más pronto que otros) pero, ¿qué es lo más importante que te llevas de la experiencia?

Some people claim that it's about studying the less that you can and having party the more that you can. Well, you do have parties... a lot of parties. You do study less than at your home university (usually). But it's not that.
Algunos dicen que es estudiar lo menos posible y tener las máximas fiestas posibles. Bueno, sí es cierto que tienes fiestas... muchas fiestas. También estudias menos, generalmente, que lo hacías en tu universidad de origen. Pero no es eso.

Some others claim that it is about having sex with all nationalities, almost like in a continuous orgy (some call it "Orgasmus", in fact) but, although many people do have sex, what happens often is that people bluffs a lot and maybe they had 1/4 of the sex that they claim.
Otros dicen que la cosa va de tener sexo con gente de todas las nacionalidades, casi en una orgía continua (algunos lo llaman "Orgasmus", de hecho) pero, aunque mucha gente sí tiene sexo, lo que suele pasar es que la mayoría fardan mucho y han tenido una cuarta parte del sexo que afirman haber tenido.

You make many friends from many nationalities (at least you expect that :P) and you learn a new language (or improve one that you know, like English in our case). That's a big part of the experience, but it's not exactly that what you really get.
Haces muchos amigos de muchas nacionalidades (al menos esperas eso :P) y aprendes un nuevo idioma (o mejoras otro que ya sabes, como el inglés en nuestro caso). Eso es una parte muy importante, pero no es exactamente lo que te llevas.

The main thing about being an Erasmus is that you get to know YOURSELF better. You meet many new people from many cultures and, from the picture that they get of you and comparing your culture with theirs, you learn more about how you really are. Maybe you didn't know that people use to think that you look (too) rude/polite/shy/arrogant/friendly... In some cases, you even discover that you are one of those things and you never realized you were.
El aspecto más importante de ser un Erasmus es que te conoces mejor A TI MISMO. Conoces mucha gente nueva de diversas culturas y, a partir de la imagen que tienen de ti y comparando tu cultura con la suya, aprendes más de cómo eres en realidad. Quizá no sabías que la gente suele pensar que pareces (muy) borde/educado/tímido/chulo/simpático... En algunos casos, incluso descubres que eres una de esas cosas y nunca te habías dado cuenta de que lo fueras.

Instead of talking about Sweden, I am going to talk about Spain this time. Vigo is not actually my home city but, since I always answered I was "from a place beside Vigo" and it is a bit bigger than Mos (my home town), I will show you some thing about it.
En lugar de hablar sobre Suecia, esta vez hablaré de España. Vigo no es mi ciudad natal en realidad pero, dado que siempre respondía que yo era de "un sitio al lado de Vigo" y es un poco más grande que Mos (mi pueblo natal), os enseñaré un poco sobre la ciudad.

As you can see on the picture, Vigo is close to the sea, beside one "ria" (the sea entering into a river... something similar as a fjord, but in a smaller way) and with the sea is deeply linked: fishing, harbour, tourism... most of the city's incomes are related with it.
Como podéis ver en la foto, Vigo está al lado del mar, junto a una ría, y al mar está profundamente ligada: pesca, puerto, turismo... la mayoría de los ingresos de la ciudad están relacionados con él.

It' s population is about 300,000 inhabitants and the best thing about Vigo is actually not in the city... it's in the sea: the Cies Islands. They are a national park and one of their beaches has been declared "best beach in the world" by The Guardian.
Su población es alrededor de 300.000 habitantes y lo mejor de Vigo, en realidad, no está en la ciudad... está en el mar: las Islas Cíes. Son un parque nacional y una de sus playas fue declarada "mejor playa del mundo" por el diario británico The Guardian.

Playing music was the thing that I missed the most in Sweden. I can play again with my band, finally. We are recovering the time lost, working really hard :)
Yet I did play sometimes in Sweden. One French guy had access to a high-school that had all the equipment that you can see on the picture... and more!! Maybe that's the reason why Sweden has so many good bands: they have really good equipment in regular schools for children to start playing.

PS: I've seen Supertramp's former singer live today :D

Tocar era una de las cosas que más echaba de menos en Suecia. Por fin puedo tocar con mi grupo de nuevo. Estamos recuperando el tiempo perdido, trabajando duro :)
De todos modos, sí que toqué algunas veces en Suecia. Un francés tenía acceso a un instituto en el que había todo el equipamiento que veis en la foto... ¡¡¡y más!!! Puede que esa sea la razón de que en Suecia haya tantas buenas bandas: tienen un buen equipamiento en las escuelas normales para que los niños empiecen a tocar.

Karlstad

I am talking today about the city (or town?) where I've lived almost one year. Karlstad is a small Swedish city (about 90,000 inhabitants) located next to the Vänern lake. This lake is the 3rd biggest in Europe, after two Russian ones. The city is located in a sort of triangle between Stockholm, Göteborg and Oslo, all of them at 3-4 hours of distance.
Hoy os hablaré de la ciudad (¿o pueblo?) en el que he vivido casi un año. Karlstad es una pequeña ciudad sueca (alrededor de 90.000 habitantes) localizada al lado del lago Vänern. Este lago es el tercero más grande de Europa, después de dos lagos rusos. La ciudad se encuentra en una especie de triángulo entre Estocolmo, Gotenburgo y Oslo, todas ellas a unas 3-4 horas de distancia.

Some of my mates there who came from big cities said it was a boring place. That can be true. However, I came from a smaller town and I enjoyed its calm and beauty. There are plenty of things that you can do if you want. Klaralven is the name of the river that passes through the city, spliting into two parts at the end, creating really beautiful landscapes.
Algunos de mis compañeros (generalmente, provenientes de ciudades grandes) decían que era un sitio aburrido. Puede que tuvieran razón. Sin embargo, yo venía de un sitio pequeño y me encantó la calma y belleza de la ciudad. Hay muchas cosas que puedes hacer si quieres, de todos modos. El nombre del río que pasa por el medio de la ciudad es Klaralven, que forma un estuario al final, creando paisajes muy bonitos.

On the map you can see where my most important places were: the two dorms (Campus Futurum and Rosenborg), the University and the city centre (Stora Torget). I'll probably talk more about them specifically later.

I missed some parts of the race today but, from what I saw:

-Lewis Hamilton is the driver that deserves the most (so far) this year's title. He was unlucky today with the safety car and, anyway, he fought and recovered the first position.
-Kubica is no longer a candidate. BMW cars seem to be far from the top cars again.
-Kimi needs to fight more.
-Massa is, simply, a mediocre (or even horrible) driver. How come a Ferrari can be losing 1.5 seconds per lap against a McLaren in the same conditions??
-It is a bit unfair that, after all Fernando Alonso fought in all the races and all that he has helped developing the car, it is Nelson Piquet who has made the first podium for Renault. The Brazilian driver has been really lucky but, anyway, congratulations for him.

Me perdí algunas partes de la carrera de hoy, pero por lo que vi:

-Lewis Hamilton es el piloto que más se merece (por lo visto hasta ahora) el título de este año. Hoy tuvo mala suerte con el safety y, aún así, peleó y recuperó la primera posición magistralmente.
-Kubica no es candidato al título. Los BMW parece que están alejados de los coches punteros otra vez.
-Massa es, simplemente, un piloto mediocre (por no decir malísimo). ¿Cómo un piloto de Ferrari puede perder 1.5 segundos por vuelta contra un McLaren en las mismas condiciones?

Another GOOD THING ABOUT SWEDEN.

Today's "Good Thing About Sweden" are bike lanes. They are everywhere! It was really surprising for me watching so many people riding bikes in Karlstad, especially in the winter when it was cold and snowed. They kept riding their bikes anyway.

These lanes are well signed, safe (they are quite separated from the road), and they take you wherever you want.

This is something that should be imitated by other countries (i.e. Spain), because it is good for the environment, for the people who wants to make some sport... Riding a bike in Spain is quite dangerous, instead of fun :S

Otra COSA BUENA DE SUECIA.

La "Cosa buena de Suecia" de hoy son los carriles bici. ¡Los hay en todas partes! Fue una sorpresa para mí ver tanta gente montando en bici en Karlstad, especialmente en invierno, con el frío y la nieve. Ellos seguían montando en bici igualmente.

Estos carriles están bien señalizados, son seguros (están bastante separados de la carretera) y te llevan donde quieras.

Otros países deberían imitar esta política (España, por ejemplo). Es bueno para el medio ambiente, para la gente que hace deporte... En España montar en bici es más peligroso que divertido :S

Great race today in Silverstone (as usual, when rain appears). Again, as it happened in Monaco, Hamilton won with a combination of skills and huge luck, and Alonso finished 6th, after a terrific race that was ruined -once again- by the horrible strategy of his team.

Alonso has demonstrated today that he is one of the best drivers under the rain. He was the fastest in the first laps, but the track started to get dried and that was against him. Then, he had to stop and his team decided not to change his tyres, believing that it wasn't going to rain any more and that the track was going to get drier... and in a couple of laps it started raining heavily. Another mistake for Renault's collection.

Alonso had to get stop once again to get new tyres, so his race was ruined and, although he made a great second part, he was unable to get the result that he deserved.

Some other things:
Hamilton: Great race, I can't deny it. He didn't make any mistake despite of the track's conditions. Nevertheless, he took a huge risk driving as fast in the last laps as in the first one. He could have had a problem and lost 10 points.
Massa: He showed the really bad driver that he is. The best part of Hamilton's victory is that Massa is no longer the championship leader. A driver that makes 5 spins in the same race doesn't deserve that position at all.
Kubica: A pity that he went out of the track, he was making a great race and he could have recovered the first position in the championship.
Raikonnen: Amazing how he could finish 4th after 3 spins and the same strategic problem than Alonso.

Tremenda carrera hoy en Silverstone (como siempre que llueve). Una vez más, como ya ocurriera en Mónaco, Hamilton ganó con una combinación de talento y suerte, y Alonso acabó 6º, después de una tremenda carrera que fue destrozada -una vez más- por la horrible estrategia de su equipo.

Alonso ha demostrado hoy que es uno de los mejores pilotos bajo lluvia. Fue el más rápido durante las primeras vueltas, pero el circuito se fue secando y eso se volvió en su contra. Entonces, tuvo que parar y el equipo decidió no ponerle ruedas nuevas, pensando que no iba a llover más y que la pista se iba a seguir secando... y en un par de vueltas empezó a llover muchísimo. Otro fallo más a sumar a la larga colección de Renault.

Alonso tuvo que parar una vez más a poner ruedas nuevas, por lo que su carrera se chafó y, pese a que hizo una gran segunda parte, no pudo obtener el resultado que merecía.

Algunos apuntes más:
Hamilton: Gran carrera, no puedo negarlo. No cometió ningún error pese a las condiciones de la pista. Sin embargo, corrió un inmenso riesgo al conducir tan rápido en las últimas vueltas como en las primeras. Podía haber tenido algún problema con el que hubiera perdido 10 valiosísimos puntos.
Massa: Demostró lo mal piloto que es. Lo mejor de la victoria de Hamilton es que el brasileño ya no es el lider del mundial. Un piloto que hace 5 trompos en la misma carrera no merece esa posición para nada.
Kubica: Una pena que se saliera del circuito, estaba haciendo una gran carrera y pudo haber recuperado la primera posición del campeonato.
Raikonnen: Increíble como pudo acabar el 4º después de 3 trompos y el mismo problema de estrategia que Alonso.

This is how I expend some time back at home now... making a huge and difficult puzzle! It has 3000 pieces, all of them in black and white, so it's really difficult to distinguish if one piece is from one part or the other :S

A BAD THING ABOUT SWEDEN (because not everything was going to be good, was it?).
Apart from the prize, that is bad for the people who drink, alcohol is a bad thing about Sweden because most of the Swedish people don't know how to drink. Usually, they are really polite and shy but, when they drink, they behave like animals, much more than I've seen in Spain. People in Spain drink to have fun, in Sweden they drink to get wasted. They get drunk as fast as they can, and then they scream, breake things, fight... It seems that they have the same problem in Finland, according to BigInFinland.com
Maybe you remember when I told you about my crazy neighbour , another victim of the alcohol.

Aparte del precio, que es malo para la gente que bebe, el alcohol es una cosa mala sobre Suecia porque la mayoría de los suecos no saben beber. Normalmente, son educados y tímidos pero, cuando beben, se comportan como animales, mucho más de lo que he visto en España. La gente en España bebe para divertirse, en Suecia beben para perder el control. Se emborrachan lo más rápido que pueden y gritan, rompen cosas, pelean... Parece que tienen el mismo problema en Finlandia, según BigInFinland.com .

EURO2008 Champions!! / Campeones de la Eurocopa 2008!!!

Spain is the Euro2008 Champion! It's been a long time (44 years) since last one. They've deserved it, they have been the best team in the competition, especially in the 3 last games. I was a bit pessimist at the start, since we are always really unlucky, but this time not even bad luck could prevent these players to win.

¡España es la campeona de la Eurocopa 2008! Ha pasado mucho tiempo (44 años) desde la anterior. Lo han merecido, han sido el mejor equipo de toda la competición, especialmente en los últimos 3 partidos. Era un poco pesimista al empezar, ya que siempre tenemos mala suerte, pero esta vez ni siquiera la mala suerte ha podido evitar que estos jugadores hayan ganado.

Lewis Hamilton: From angel to evil / Lewis Hamilton: De ángel a demonio

Lewis Hamilton was last year's new sensation. He was a rookie challenging a double world-champion, he was doing good and, for many, he did better than Fernando Alonso. The Spanish driver wasn't focused, he made mistakes, and Hamilton presented himself as a good boy who did nothing against the evil jealous team mate.

Last year, Hamilton was always smiling to the cameras, no matter what, no matter how, he was always happy and "fair" with Alonso (although he reported his own team mate, Alonso, to the FIA several times).

This year, the spaniard is no longer his team mate and he is free to be the leader of the team. However, things are not going so good for him, he is making too many mistakes and he is showing a really different face to the press now.

After crashing with Kimi Raikonnen in Canada, because he didn't see the red light at the end of the pit lane) he beat a camera that was recording him. Later, he claimed that it wasn't his fault not seeing the light... it was the light's fault:

Hamilton said: "The rule is silly. We are in the race, how can you red light at the end of the pit-lane? But that's the rule and I accept it."

In addition, since the British press started saying bad things about him (after being too good with him in the past) he got angry with them and started treating them unrespectfully:

"I absolutely 100% aim on bouncing back [at Silverstone]," he said.

"Regardless of what's written in the papers tomorrow, I'm going to go back to the workshop and push with the team and we're going to focus on the next race and we're going to hit 'em hard."

Last year he claimed that Alonso was paranoid, and now it is him who is saying that everybody is against him.

Lewis Hamilton fue la sensación del año pasado. Era un novato que ponía en problemas a un doble campeón del mundo, lo hizo bien y, para muchos, lo hizo mejor que Fernando Alonso. El piloto español no estaba centrado, cometió errores, y Hamilton se presentó a sí mismo como el chico bueno que no hacía nada contra su malvado compañero de equipo celoso.

El año pasado, Hamilton estaba siempre sonriendo a las cámaras, sin importar qué pasara, siempre estaba feliz y era "limpio" con Alonso (aunque luego denunciara a su propio compañero de equipo, Alonso, a la FIA varias veces).

Este año, el español ya no es su rival y Hamilton es libre de ser el líder del equipo. Sin embargo, las cosas no van tan bien para él, está cometiendo errores y ahora muestra a la prensa una cara completamente diferente.

Euro2008 semifinals!

Today is the big match! Spain is going to try to get to the Euro2008 final! Spain already beat Russia in the group, though this time it seems to be harder. Fortunately, the statistics say that Spain always get to the finals when the pass the quarter finals... maybe it is because that only happened twice before, but both times they passed :P

¡Hoy es el gran partido! ¡España se va a jugar el pase a la final de la Eurocopa! Ya ganaron a Rusia en el grupo, pero esta vez parece que va a ser más complicado. Afortunadamente, las estadísticas dicen que España llega a la final cada vez que pasan de cuartos... quizás seá porque eso sólo ha ocurrido dos veces, pero en ambas pasaron a la final :P

Songbird

I am going to talk today about a new media player (nobody is paying me to do so, just in case anyone wonders that) that I discovered recently. It's called Songbird and it's from the same people that brought us Firefox (a really good web browser, if you don't know it).

It's still in the 0.6 version (i.e. under development) but I downloaded it to start trying it and to help if I can. Music is one of my main passions, so I like to have a good player. And this one is likely to become my favorite in the future: you can customize it a lot (and it seems to improve) and the good thing, for me, is that it mixes the nice characteristics from iTunes, Windows Media Player and Winamp (internet music shopping and podcasting capabilities from iTunes, for example, with more flexibility than that program).

Songbird's philosophy is to join a media player with a web browser, to make you able to look easily on the Internet for music-related stuff that you might want. You have a web browser integred on the player for that and, since it comes from Mozilla, it is a good web browser. Actually, I am writing this article from Songbird and not from Firefox.

The bad side of Songbird it's that, since it is still a beta, the performance is not perfect, it takes too many resources from the computer... Anyway, I think the final version will be a great media player. And it's planned for January! :D

Hoy os voy a hablar de un reproductor de música y vídeos (nadie me paga para que lo haga, por si alguien se lo plantea) que he descubierto hace poco. Se llama Songbird y es de la misma gente que hace el Firefox (un muy buen navegador, por si no lo conocéis).

Aún está en la versión 0.6 ( o lo que es lo mismo, en desarrollo) pero lo descargué para probarlo y colaborar si puedo. La música es una de mis mayores pasiones, así que me gusta tener un buen reproductor. Y este tiene papeletas para convertirse en mi preferido en el futuro: se puede personalizar muchísimo (y mejorará) y lo mejor, para mí, es que combina las buenas características de iTunes, Windows Media Player y Winamp (la capacidad de compra por internet y la gestión de PodCasts de iTunes sin la rigidez de éste, por ejemplo).

La filosofía de Songbird es la de juntar un reproductor y un navegador, para posibilitarte encontrar en internet lo que busques para tu música. Tiene un navegador integrado y, dado que viene de Mozilla, es un buen navegador. De hecho, estoy escribiendo este artículo desde Songbird y no desde Firefox.

El punto débil es que, dado que está aún en beta, no funciona 100% bien siempre, utiliza muchos recursos del ordenador... De todas formas, creo que la versión final será un genial reproductor. ¡Y está prevista para enero! :D

Spain in semifinals!!! / España en semifinales!!!

And Spain did it!!! It's so hard to believe, actually. The match looked exactly like the typical one that Spanish people have seen so many times: good football, many chances, not enough goals... and game lost at the end due to the other team's luck. Getting to the penalty shots was even worst... but, for the first time in maaaaany years, Spain wasn't unlucky and it's in the semifinals of the Eurocup, after 24 years.

¡¡Y España lo consiguió!! Es bastante increíble, la verdad. El partido parecía el típico que los españoles han visto tantas veces: buen fútbol, muchas ocasiones, sin goles suficientes... y al final el otro equipo gana con un gol de suerte. Llegar a los penaltis era aún peor... pero, por primera vez en taaaaaaaantos años, España no tuvo mala suerte y está en las semifinales de la eurocopa, después de 24 años.

Finally, I am back in Spain. It feels less weird than I thought. I guess that I will start missing Karlstad in a couple of days, though.
Anyway, my home looks like a farm now! I show you pictures of my house, and then of my dogs, a growing avocado, my new bunny friends and my grandmother's dog (he is looking angry at me at the picture, but I wasn't afraid).
Finalmente, estoy de vuelta en España. Me siento menos raro de lo que pensaba, aunque imagino que echaré de menos Karlstad en los próximos días.
Bueno, ¡mi casa parece una granja! Os enseño fotos de mi casa y luego de mis perros, un aguacate que está creciendo, unos conejitos de los que me he hecho amigo y del perro de mi abuela (mira con cara de cabreo hacia mí en una foto, pero yo no me asusté).

Well, I know 6th of June was a week ago, but I was unable to publish that day because I don't have internet connection in my room, so I waited until today.
Anyway, 6th of June is Swedish National Day. I went to check out how they celebrated it, and here you have some pictures of it. Everybody had flags in their houses, there were some concerts... It was quite interesting, though it wasn't a huge thing (at least here in Karlstad). By the way, according to wikipedia, this day was selected as the national day "in honour of the election of King Gustav Vasa in 1523, as this was considered the foundation of modern Sweden".

Bueno, sé que el 6 de junio fue la semana pasada, pero no pude publicar ese día porque no tengo internet en la habitación, así que esperé hasta hoy.
La cosa es que el 6 de junio es el día nacional de Suecia. Fui a ver cómo lo celebraban y aquí os pongo algunas fotos de ello. Todo el mundo tenía banderas en sus casas, hubo conciertos... Estuvo interesante, aunque no fue gran gran cosa (al menos aquí en Karlstad). Por cierto, según wikipedia, el 6 de junio es el día nacional de Suecia "por ser el dia en el cual Gustavo Vasa fue elegido rey de Suecia [en 1523]."

Our Erasmus here is finishing, and many people is leaving these days. It is so weird to say goodbye to so many friends, knowing that you won't see most of them again... Everyday the ones who remain here have to face a new farewell, until we leave too.
This is one of the hardest part of being an Erasmus student. Farewells are always tough, but more when involve people who live thousands of km away.

Nuestro Erasmus aquí se acaba, y mucha gente se marcha estos días. Es muy raro decir adiós a tantos amigos, sabiendo que no vas a volver a ver más a la mayoría de ellos... Todos los días los que quedamos tenemos que afrontar una nueva despedida, hasta que nos marchemos también.
Esta es una de las partes más duras de ser un Erasmus. Las despedidas siempre son duras, pero más cuando incluyen gente que vive a miles de kilómetros de distancia.

The Eurocup 2008 has started with some quite boring games (France-Rumania, Austria-Croatia) and a really good one (Holand-Italy). Today is time for Spain to play its first match, against Russia in this case. As usual, Spain has a great team considering the player's names, but I don't think they will do anything important (as usual, too). I'll be glad if I'm wrong. My favourite team, apart from Spain, is Czech Republic because they always play attacking and make their matches really interesting to watch.

The other members of Spain's group are Greece and.........Sweden! It is going to be interesting to watch the Spain vs. Sweden in the central square of Karlstad :P

La Eurocopa 2008 ha empezado con algunos partidos bastante aburridos (Francia-Rumanía, Austria-Croacia) y uno muy bueno (Holanda-Italia). Hoy le toca a España jugar su primer partido, en este caso contra Rusia. Como siempre, España tiene un buen equipo sobre el papel, en base a los nombres de los jugadores, pero no creo que hagan nada importante (como siempre). Me alegraré de equivocarme. Mi equipo favorito, aparte de España, es la República Checa porque siempre juegan atacando y hacen sus partidos muy entretenidos de ver.

Los otros miembros del grupo de España son Grecia y...........¡Suecia! Va ser interesante ver el partido de España contra Suecia en la plaza central de Karlstad :P

This was a biter sweet GP: on the one hand, I am happy because of Kubica's victory and Hamilton's mistake. On the other hand, I am disappointed with Alonso's mistake and the subsequent abandon.
Este fue un GP agridulce: por una parte, estoy contento por la victoria de Kubica y el error de Hamilton. Por otra parte, estoy decepcionado por el error de Alonso y el consiguiente abandono.

Hamilton didn't respect the red light in the pit and crashed against Raikonnen, putting both of them out of the race. Kubica was out of rivals because of that and thanks to Renault which, once again, chose the wrong strategy for Alonso, forcing him to stop once more than other rivals. However, that mistake of his team is not excuse for his spin, which ruined one race that was being very good (including one awesome qualification).

Kubica se quedó sin rivales gracias a eso y a Renault que, una vez más, escogió la estrategia equivocada para Alonso, forzándolo a parar una vez más que sus rivales. Yesterday I had my last exam... what means that I am free!! Now I can enjoy the more that I can my last days here. Going to the beach is one of the best things that I can do, I did it yesterday and hope to do it more times. It is not fair that Sweds are tanner than me!!

Ayer tuve mi último examen... lo que significa que estoy libre!!! Ahora puedo disfrutar al máximo mis últimos días aquí. Ir a la playa es una de las mejores cosas que puedo hacer, ayer lo hice y espero hacerlo más veces. ¡¡No es justo que los suecos estén más morenos que yo!!

I continue with my posts about Sweden, and this time is water's turn. This is another unusual aspect to highlight, but is quite important, especially for an Erasmus student. Why? Because if the water in your city is not good, you will have to buy it, so you will expend a lot of money. In Sweden is not the case (at least in all the cities I have been), the water is amazingly good everywhere, so you save all that money. In addition, tap water use to be free almost everywhere, so you can save money even when you want to drink away from home.

I guess the reason for this is that they take more care about their environment and that water from snow is more pure.

Sigo con mis entradas sobre Suecia, y hoy es el turno del agua. Este es otro aspecto extraño para destacar, pero es bastante importante, especialmente para un estudiante Erasmus. ¿Por qué? Porque si el agua de tu ciudad no es buena, tendrás que compararla y gastarás mucho dinero en ello, por tanto. En Suecia no es el caso (al menos en todas las ciudades en las que he estado), el agua es impresionantemente buena en todas partes, y te ahorras todo ese dinero. Además, el agua del grifo suele ser gratis también casi en todas partes, por lo que también ahorras dinero cuando quieres beber fuera de casa.

Imagino que la razón de esto es que cuidan más el medio ambiente y que el agua proveniente de nieve es más pura.

House vs Scrubs

One of the few things from TV that I miss in Sweden is watching House. Instead, I have the opportunity of watching Scrubs, an amazing hospital comedy. Which one do you prefer? I was a big fan of Doctor House, but I think now I like Scrubs more. They have a really crazy humour, and is not so repetitive and dramatic as House is sometimes. Appart from that, I read somewhere that Dr. House is almost a copy of Dr. Cox from Scrubs, I can't do anything than agree with that, I think is quite obvious.

Una de las pocas cosas de la tele que echo de menos en Suecia es ver House. En su lugar, tengo la oportunidad de ver Scrubs, una impresionante comedia en un hospital. Cuál preferís? Yo era un gran fan del Doctor House, pero creo que ahora me gusta Scrubs más. Tienen un sentido del humor muy alocado, y no son tan repetitivos y dramáticos como es House a veces. Además de eso, una vez leí no sé dónde que el Dr. House era casi una copia del Dr. Cox de Scrubs, y no puedo hacer más que estar de acuerdo con eso, me parece bastante obvio.

As I commented in a previous post , Hamilton was quite lucky this Monaco GP. Peter Sauber, founder of BMW-Sauber, Peter Sauber, thinks the same:

"The fact that the suspension remained intact was simply lucky," Sauber wrote.
"The fact that the incident happened towards the end of a lap, rather than at the beginning, was lucky again, otherwise he would have lost much more time driving slowly back to the pits," he continued.

I'd add that he finished the race with a puncture in his wheel, so with one or two more laps he could have to retire.

Como ya comenté en una entrada anterior , Hamilton fue bastante afortunado al ganar el GP de Mónaco. El fundador de BMW-Sauber, Peter Sauber, piensa lo mismo:

"Que su suspensión no sufriera daños fue por pura suerte", escribía Sauber. "Que el accidente haya ocurrido hacia el final de la vuelta, en lugar de al principio, también fue suerte, o si no habría perdido mucho más tiempo pilotando hasta boxes".

As you can read in the title, I have to ask people to use their internet, because the Swedish guy that shared his connection with me is moving. I will publish almost as often, I think, this is more to tell some people the reason why they can't find me on msn or skype as usual.

Yesterday we had this party, with a weird theme combination, but really funny, as usual. The first part was dressing up with something Swedish, since we have been living in this country for (at least) 5 months (more in my case). The second part was wearing a (hopefully) funny hat.
Ayer fue esta fiesta, con una extraña combinación de temas, pero muy divertida como de costumbre. La primera parte era vestirse con algo sueco, dado que hemos vivido en este país (al menos) 5 meses (más en mi caso). La segunda parte consitía en llevar un gorro gracioso (a ser posible).

Good things about Sweden / Buenas cosas de Suecia

I'm going to start a new section. I will, hopefully, post several good and bad things that I discovered about Sweden after being living here all this time.
Voy a empezar una nueva sección. Pondré, espero, varias entradas sobre cosas buenas y malas que he descubierto sobre Suecia después de haber estado viviendo aquí todo este tiempo.

Strange but true, my first good thing is going to be the sky. What is weird about the sky? First of all, it has a wider range of colours, that I hadn't seen anywhere else. Instead of having a single tone of blue in the sky, usually you can see a sort of gradient of blues, more lighter, more greenish...
Then, sunsets take a longer time to happen, so you can enjoy it more time. If you add this to the previous point, you can experience sunsets more gorgeous than you ever imagined.
And, finally... maybe not a good point, but a weird one, the amount of hours of light that we have change in a really crazy way! In winter light remained from about 10:00 to 15:00 and sun never rised completely. Now, we have light from 03:00 to 23:00 and night is never fully dark.
Extraño pero cierto, mi primera cosa buena va a ser el cielo. ¿Qué tiene de raro el cielo? Lo primero, tiene un rango mayor de colores, que nunca había visto en otra parte. En lugar de tener un sólo tono de azul, normalmente tienes una especie de degradado de azul, más claro, más verdoso...Después, las puestas de sol duran más, por lo que las puedes disfrutar durante más tiempo. Si añades esto al punto anterior, como resultado puedes ver puestas de sol más bonitas de lo que nunca habías imaginado. Y, finalmente, puede que no una buena cosa, pero extraña, es que las horas de luz cambian de una forma increíble. En invierno teníamos luz desde las 10:00 hasta las 15:00 y el sol nunca llegaba a subir de todo. Ahora, tenemos luz desde las 03:00 hasta las 23:00 y la noche no llega a ser nunca completamente oscura.

All that has to do with the latitude. I (and some others, too) guess even the different blue of the sky has to do with being so up north.
Todo eso tiene que ver con la latitud. Creo (y otros también) que incluso el diferente color del azul de cielo tiene que ver con estar tan al Norte.

Last parties.../Últimas fiestas...

These days we've had some parties and, since sadly some people is starting to leave, they are the last for some of them. Saturday was "Campus Festen". It was advertised as the biggest student party ever in Karlstad. We thought it was going to be so crowded, so noisy, so everything... and then it was all a bluff. I don't think more than 300 people were there at the same time at maximum. I checked the video used to promote it, and what they do is showing the same people over and over again to try to look as if thousands were there...

It was fun, though, especially the pillow fight, a sort of tradition, I guess (by the way, I've been told that the guy in white in the front broke his arm during that fight...).

Estos días hemos tenido algunas fiestas y, dado que algunos ya se marchan, son las últimas para ellos. El sábado fue la "Campus Festen". Se había anunciado como la mayor fiesta estudiantil de Karlstad. Pensábamos que iba a estar abarrotado, con un montón de ruido, con un montón de todo... al final resultó ser todo un timo. No creo que más de 300 personas estuvieran allí al mismo tiempo. Revisé el vídeo que usaron para promocionarlo, y lo que hacen es sacar a la misma gente todo el rato para que parezca que haya miles...

Fue divertida, que conste, especialmente la guerra de almohadas, una especie de tradición, por lo visto (por cierto, me han dicho que el tío que aparece con la camiseta blanca en primer plano se rompió el brazo durante la pelea...).

Yesterday we had a goodbye dinner for Susana in Rosenborg, because she has left today. We all have this strange sensation that we know that the end is near, but we don't want to think on it...
It is going to be tough to leave after so much time and so many good moments here.

Ayer tuvimos una cena de despedida para Susana en Rosenborg, porque se ha ido hoy. Todos tenemos esta extraña sensación de que sabemos que el final se acerca, pero no queremos pensar en ello...

For this final assigment, I have chosen to watch the video "Story of Stuff". I recommend everyone to watch it, because it is really interesting. In brief, it talks about (our...) USA's economy model, based on consumption, the more possible and the fastest possible. I am not going to explain more about it, it is better for you to watch it for yourselves; I will tell you my thoughts about it instead.

The video show us that we buy too many stuff, and usually we trash things when they are still valid. We do that because of the "planned obsolescence" and "perceived obsolescence" (i.e. things break faster than they should, because they are designed for that, and we throw them because they are not cool anymore).

I partially agree with the video. That indeed happens: computer are obsolete after 2 years and it is almost inevitable to buy a new one, and fashion is always changing and telling us that we have to buy new clothes because the ones that we have are not nice anymore, for example.

However, in other cases things change because they improve. For example, today's cars are not so tough and hard as the ones from the 50's, but that helps you when you have an accident: if the car squeezes, it "sucks" the impact and not so much force hits the people.

In the computer field, new flat monitors are advertised as cooler, but they are more comfortable, less heavy, less harmful to the environment,... So, I think things should change, it is up to us not to be impulsive and wait to buy new things until we need them.

Those two effects (planned and perceived obsolescence) are the ways in which a plan to revitalize the economy in the 50's take place. That supposed design seems a bit "conspiranoic", but it looks frighteningly accurate, too. Society has changed from that time, and the result is exactly the same as planned: a consumer society.

It is quite interesting that the happiness levels were at their maximum in the 50's (before this change) and they have been dropping down since then. We try more and more to be happy through things, instead doing it through traditional ways. It might be a cliché, but some women go shopping when they are depressed. It seems that the only way to be happy is having the latest TV/laptop/mobile/car/iPod... As an advertising student, I am worried about its role in this, saying people that the way to happiness is buying...

The last point that I want to comment is about "externalized prices". In the video it explains that some things are cheaper than they could be, because the manufacturers made others, not us, pay for the goods: workers, people in the 3rd world, environment... This is one of the key points of global economy: are we willing to pay more for everything to help other people to have a better life (i.e. not so horrible)? Will you accept to pay a 10% more in every article that you buy if that means that people in Africa will have a decent life?

I am not going to answer this last question, I prefer you to think on it.

Para este trabajo final, he decidido ver el vídeo "Story of Stuff" (la historia de las cosas, en inglés). Os recomiendo a todos que lo veais, porque es realmente interesante. En resumen, habla de (nuestra...) el modelo económico de EEUU., basado en el consumo , cuanto más y más rápido mejor. Muestra todos los problemas que genera ese modelo, las razones detrás de ciertas cosas, etc. No puedo explicar y traducir todo, simplemente comentaré un par de cosas que me vinieron a la cabeza.

El vídeo muestra cómo compramos demasiadas cosas, y muchas veces tiramos a la basura cosas que aún sirven. Hacemos eso debido a la "obsolescencia planificada" y a la "obsolescencia percibida". En otras palabras: las cosas se rompen antes de lo que deberían, ya que están diseñadas para eso, y tiramos muchas porque ya no nos parecen "guays".

Estoy parcialmente de acuerdo con el vídeo. Eso pasa, en efecto: los ordenadores están obsoletos en 2 años y es casi obligado comprar uno nuevo, y la moda nos dice que tenemos que comprar ropa nueva porque la que tenemos ya no vale, por ejemplo.

Sin embargo, en otros casos los cambios se deben a mejoras. Por ejemplo, los coches de hoy en día son menos duros que los de los cincuenta, pero eso te ayuda si tienes un accidente: si el coche se deforma y absorbe el impacto, tú no recibes tanta fuerza de éste.

En el campo de los ordenadores, los nuevos monitores planos son anunciados como más "guays", pero también son más cómodos, menos pesados, menos contaminantes,... Por tanto, pienso que las cosas deben cambiar, es cosa nuestra el no ser impulsivos y tirar las cosas antes de tiempo.

Esos dos efectos (la obsolescencia planificada y percibida) son las vías a través de las cuales un plan para revitalizar la economía a partir de los 50 se materializa. Ese supuesto plan suena un poco "conspiranoico", pero es tristemente acertado también. La sociedad ha cambiado desde entonces, y el resultado es el planeado: una sociedad consumista.

Es bastante interesante que los niveles de felicidad [en EEUU.] estuvieran en su punto máximo en los años 50 (justo antes de ese proceso de consumismo) y que hayan ido bajando desde entonces. Intentamos cada vez más ser felices a través de cosas, en lugar de por otros medios. Puede sonar a tópico, pero muchas mujeres se van de compras cuando se deprimen. Parece que para ser feliz haya que tener el último televisor/portátil/móvil/coche/iPod... Como estudiante de publicidad, me preocupa el papel de ésta en ello, diciéndole a la gente que para ser feliz hay que comprar.

El último punto que quiero comentar es el de los "precios externalizados". En el vídeo explica que algunas cosas son más baratas de lo que deberían, porque los productores hacen pagar a otros, no a los consumidores, pagar por los productos: a los trabajadores, a la gente del tercer mundo, al medio ambiente... Este es uno de los temas claves de la economía global: ¿estamos dispuestos a pagar más por todo para que otra gente viva mejor (o no viva tan mal)? ¿Aceptarías pagar un 10% más en todo lo que compras para que la gente de África tenga una vida decente?

No voy a responder a esa pregunta, prefiero que vosotros penséis en ello.

Summary of Monaco GP/Resumen del GP de Mónaco

As all the fans wanted, it rained in Monaco today. The race was really exciting thanks to that, with a lot of fast changes, crashes, strategy... The sad part is that Alonso was doing a great race and it was gone after he touched Heidfeld when Fernando was trying to overtake him. Without that, he could have been 4th or even 3rd.

Hamilton, after a good race, and luck too (as usual), won the GP and it's again the leader on the general clasification.

Como la mayoría de los fans deseaban, hoy llovió en Mónaco. La carrera fue muy divertida gracias a eso, con muchos cambios, accidentes, estrategia... La parte mala es que Alonso estaba haciendo una muy buena carrera pero de nada sirvió después de que se tocara con Heidfeld al tratar Fernando de adelantarlo. Si eso no hubiera pasado, habría podido ser 4º o incluso 3º.

Hamilton, después de una buena carrera, y suerte también (como siempre), ganó el GP y es otra vez el líder de la clasificación general.

This weekend is full of events! As I told you in the previous post, tomorrow is Eurovision. Campusfesten, the biggest party in Karlstad, is tomorrow, too. And Sunday is going to be Formula 1's Monaco Grand Prix. I'm very excited about it, because most of the weather forecast say that it will rain... and that can be soooo fun! This year the cars have not so much electronic help, so the pilots will have to show their real skills there. I hope that Alonso can do something nice.

¡Este fin de semana está lleno de acontecimientos! Como ya os dije en el anterior post, mañana es Eurovisión. Campusfesten, la mayor fiesta de Karlstad, es mañana también. Y el domingo será el Gran Premio de Mónaco de Fórmula 1. Tengo muchas ganas de verlo, porque la mayoría de los pronósticos dicen que puede llover... y eso sería taaaan divertido! Este año los coches no tienen tantas ayudas electrónicas, por lo que los pilotos tendrán que mostrar toda su capacidad. Espero que Alonso pueda hacer algo bueno.

Nico sends me a link from El Pais (in Spanish) about a survey that shows that the majority of the Spanish people prefer watching a football match than having sex. In general, Spaniards put more passion about football than the average in the rest of Europe.

There is an interesting fact about Sweds: 95% of them claim that football is the only activity that they live with passion and 88% of them have hugged or kissed a stranger during a football match.

I think that, if I have to choose, I won't vote for football. Especially after the injury that I got after playing it!

Nico me envía un link de El País sobre una encuesta que muestra que la mayoría de los españoles prefieren ver un partido de fútbol al sexo. En general, los españoles ponen más pasión en el fútbol que la mayoría del resto de Europa.

También pone un dato interesante sobre los suecos: el 95% afirma que "el fútbol es la única actividad que desata su pasión y emociones" y un 88% afirma haber abrazado o besado a algún desconocido durante un partido.

Si tengo que escoger, no votaría por el fútbol. ¡Especialmente después de la lesión del otro día por jugar un partido!

Some weeks ago, I showed you how nice was Karlstad "back to life" thanks to the arrival of Spring. However, only a week after having 25º, we have gone back to winter: as you could see in the weather forecast in the blog, temperatures have drop down to 0º, and some days ago it even snowed a bit! Climate change is a reality and this is one of the evidences: it barely snowed in winter and it snows again in spring.

Hace unas semanas, os enseñaba lo bonita que estaba Karlstad "de vuelta a la vida" gracias a la llegada de la primavera. Sin embargo, sólo una semana después de tener 25º, hemos vuelto al invierno: como podéis ver en la previsión del tiempo del blog, las temperaturas han bajado a 0º, y hace unos días ¡incluso nevó un poco! El cambio climático es una realidad, y esta es una de las pruebas: casi no nieva en invierno y nieva en primavera.

Being injured has several bad consequences: you can't run, you get tired walking with your crutches, stairs are a challenge,... But it has some good aspects, too, and the best is how nice is everyone with you. These days a lot of people is helping me a lot, and all I can be is really grateful.

Estar lesionado tiene varias consecuencias negativas: no puedes correr, te cansas al andar con las muletas, las escaleras son un reto,... Pero tiene aspectos positivos, también, y uno de los mejores es que todo el mundo es muy bueno contigo. Estos días mucha gente me está ayudando mucho, y todo lo que puedo estar es muy agradecido.

A car driver in Australia has been fined for strapping down his beer rather than his young child.

Police said they were "shocked and appalled" when they pulled over the car south of Alice Springs in Australia's Northern Territory.

Yes, my dear readers, this weekend there was a student sports competition, "Studentiaden" in Karlstad, and I participated in it (football, beachvolley and bowling). The football field was really bad, with bumps and holes everywhere, and in the third game I twisted my ankle and got injured. I have a sprain and I have to use crutches...

The tournament was fun, anyway. We didn't win anything, but we enjoyed it a lot. In addition, the weather was really good and everything was really beautiful.

Now I can say that I know Swedish hospitals too. The one in Karlstad looks fine, though it took 5 and a half hours to be fully attended there. At least the doctors and nurses learnt my name and that I was "the patient who doesn't speak Swedish".

Sí, mis queridos lectores, este fin de semana hubo una competición deportiva para estudiantes," Studentiaden", en Karlstad y yo participé en ella (fútbol, volley-playa y bolos). El campo de fútbol era muy malo, estaba lleno de agujeros y baches, y en el tercer partido me torcí el tobillo y me lesioné. Tengo un esguince y tengo que usar muletas dos semanas.

El torneo fue divertido, por lo menos. No ganamos nada, pero lo pasamos bien. Además, el tiempo fue genial y todo estaba muy bonito.

Ahora puedo decir que también conozco los hospitales suecos. Este de Karlstad parece estar bien, aunque estuve allí 5 horas y media para que me atendieran del todo. Por lo menos los médicos y las enfermeras se aprendieron mi nombre y que era "el paciente que no habla sueco".

This Friday we had a German-Dutch party in Campus. This seems a good excuse to post the last pictures from the trip to Berlin.

I want to thank here this two guys that appear in this picture, Uwe and Johannes, for their help and advices in Berlin. Especially after the stupid fine that we had to pay, when they tried to cheer us up.
Quiero dar las gracias aquí a estos dos tíos que aparecen en la foto, Uwe y Johannes, por su ayuda y consejos en Berlín. Especialmente después de la estúpida multa que tuvimos que pagar, cuando nos intentaron animar.

By the way... one advice if someone is ever going to Berlin (or anywhere in Germany): if you buy a train/metro ticket, is not valid until you stamp it in this damned machine:

But, of course, nobody tells you that, because you are in Germany and nobody explains you anything, you are supposed to know everything without reason. If you don't stamp the ticket, you have to pay a fine of 40 €, even if you had bought the ticket a few minutes before getting into the train and you didn't know anything about it.

As I told you before, spring has arrived to Sweden. Swedish people (and us too) celebrated it in various ways, one of those making barbeques. We made one beside lake Vänern and another one in Campus Futurum. Here you are, some pictures of them.
